oops. I thought I had posted this idea and I implemented it (on github) and submitted a pull request w/o any community discussion. I may be smart and talented, but I can be ... uh, quite ditsy.
So the idea is to change the "Confirm attack" option from a boolean checkbox to a list with the options to choose when you want to confirm attacks:
Always (includes Very Easy)
Easy
Normal
Hard
Very Hard
Impossible
Never
Then, add an "Auto-attack" setting (with similar options) so that you can have your character automatically attempt to attack a monster as soon as you move to a space next to it. This only works immediately after moving (so if you are stationary and a monster moves next to you, you'll still have to manually attack) and the monster still gets a chance to attack you first (based upon their aggressiveness, just as before). So the options for that are just sort-of reversed:
Never
Very Easy
Easy
Normal
Hard
Very Hard
Always (includes Impossible)
Anyway, the current patch can probably use some clean-up to the verbiage and such and I also wasn't sure of the best place for the new enum class I added EncounterDifficulty, although I'm thinking a static subclass of something related to it rather than a stand-alone in the package com.gpl.rpg.AndorsTrail.util. hehe, it's been so long since I worked in Java I almost forgot that it had enums and first implemented it the way we did enums before that feature in 1.5.
LOL! Yes, that is EXACTLY why I wrote it! I got tired of running in circles around the monster and then after be adjacent to them 4 or 5 times them getting the first attack. This is especially painful on my offence-heavy, defence-weak character who relies on getting the first shot in to keep from needing to use a potion. But I figured that if I was going to have this based upon the difficulty level, then I should do the same thing with the attack confirmation dialog.
