...most of the experienced/high level players i encountered in some threads do not prefer critical damage...
initially, most people actally seemed to
go towards critical builds...
but recently - people are starting over: in fear of losing too much power.
there are big changes coming, and the frequency of critical hits are being reduced.
(i expected this from day one, seeing how over-powered they were)
but, some players have recently abandoned their "Love of Criticals"
in fear of it being totally nerfed - uhhh... weakened to the point of uselessness
(although, with the reduction in frequency - comes a boost in threat: added critical effects!)

me too!!!
just wait till you see the update...
Critical -> SPLAT! [Oskar added left-over blood & such]
(if they live, they will have a 50% chance of suffering the critical effects mentioned)

And what are the perks of just sticking to your normal damage?
If you focus heavily on any skill, or set of skills...
then, simply put, you only miss out on what you didn't choose.
other possible builds?
- all BC on level up - then Max out Bark Skin (a lot of new DR gear coming )
- get Regeneration every time you get Increased Fortitude
- status defenses (this becomes HUGE later in the game)
- quick learner / magic finder - for those who are trying to avoid grinding / hunting
- SOOO many more! and i have tried a LOT - any questions,
feel free to ask!

Plus, there is significant changes to the critical hit chance coming in v0.6.11 in which there is a few threads about.
+1!!!
