In normal mode (unlimited) - I have completed the game without many potions (just 4 bonemeal) and instead consuming ONLY food items. So regen is a compete waste of skill points. Spend 3 points on IR instead. No corpse eater either.
So, I think PD is perfectly enjoyable with some planning about the areas in advance. Using potions in PD would be wrong in principle. There are tricks available to keep the player alive even in difficult circumstances provided you push IR to L2/3 before advancing into dangerous areas.
The real challenge for me were the early levels. So much time goes into boring grinding job just to raise enough gold to buy items. Though the latest update is quite helpful for PD players to resist the monster attacks.
We have a new Beta: v0.8.13 ("Troubling Times") !

I disagree with the one point that potions are against the principle of PD. PD is about learning to plan and manage risk, not about handicapping yourself. You are free to do both, of course, but IMO these are separate challenges.

What's wrong with using potions in PD mode? In PD mode you need to use everything that's available!

Re: Permadeath (PD) - Who is doing it?
Potions make PD mode very easy to survive. The only risk then remains is the sudden death from conditions afflicted by the monsters.
I am saying it from my experiences in normal (unlimited mode) where food items alone significantly helped to avoid potions altogether while keeping it challenging enough to not rush into areas without applying enough thought beforehand.

PD mode is never easy to survive. You make one mistake, just one, it's over.

And Osho, it is not just conditions, it is also crits. You need to plan ahead and not rush into areas too fast.
Potions are a part if the planning, and evem with them, and being careful, died often enough. Especially in early levels.

Re: Permadeath (PD) - Who is doing it?
I have a workaround to the crits too. It slows down my progress a bit (as you said, not to rush) but PD anyways requires patience and careful approach.
Conditions are the only thing that makes me nervous in PD as not every effect can be countered with a potion.
