What about having a horse for faster movement?
Or a train that goes through every city but you can only unlock it later in the game and the train does not wait for you it departs every x time

Some more ways of making long distance travelling more interesting:
1) Offer high XP for the tasks or quests that involve much travelling. As already mentioned, more activities on the way to Remgard would make it worth the efforts if the players get maximum benefits in the form of variety of equipments (traders like Teksin), faster leveling up opportunities (high XP monsters), and lots of hidden suprises with juicy rewards.
2) Adding more human settlements along the path to Remgard. It's boring to keep killing monsters. Similar to Dulian Road having presence of wood settlement, and other diversions in the form of NPC characters like Argoth, and that guy with quest related to amulet (forgot his name, illegarias or something)

Brimhaven *is* part of making the road toward Remgard both more populated and more rewarding, as you suggest. Arulir Mountain *is* part of adding high XP monsters along the way.

Not talking about the project but the actual playthrough. Every quest (78) and places visited (555) are completed.
