Can you afford more bonemeal? Or if that isn't working for you, I'd grind a bit more.

Despite being difficult to reach him is a worthy opponent. Kind of hard to answer that question when you don't give us the details of what your approach is.
But generally speaking, the best approach is to stand one tile under the gate. Let them come to you and kill two or three at a time. Once you start to make some headway, I generally move closer to the boss moving to the southwest.
It's also nice to load up on Lodar potions.
