It could be like you bump into one of them, and be rude to him. And drunk that they always are, they start a fight. After killing them u get some of the loot (food/cheap weapons/gear/gold) that was on the guards.
or maybe just some XP because they spent all their cash on booze.

I'm pretty sure they bully their way in buying the booze for free. Maybe they even collect some weekly ransom or somethin
