Dual wielding

Post by Wyrmspawn »

I just saw a lot about dual wielding on the forums, and most of these seem to be of the opinion that dual wielding would decrease defense and boost offense.

But there are weapons such as parrying daggers that were widely used in medieval times. I just don't get where decreased defense comes from. I mean, you hold two knives instead of one, that doesn't make you any less capable of parrying attacks. So I just don't see where the ideas about decreased defense came from.

If you ask me, dual wielding shouldn't decrease your defense at all, but should have a bonus to both offensive and defensive capabilities. Also, I don't see why dual wielding should be limited to daggers. Berserkers wielded two axes, Bruce Lee wielded two nunchakus, dual wielding doesn't seem to get the right approach on Andors trail.

Here's my suggestion:

The beginners should choose from two skills, dual wield, or shield skill. The dual wield allows him to dual wield, the shield skill allows him to use a shield.

Bucklers and daggers should not require any of these skill points.
Hey guys, I'm back.

Two daggers is only one of the envisioned forms of two-handed combat. Others involve a single weapon that is so long, heavy, etc that it requires both hands to wield it. With both hands occupied with an offensive weapon, it may leave one more open to attack.

It is true that in some games (maybe real life too?) wielding two weapons increases defence with better chance to block attacks.
The problem is, how to balance increased offensive capabilites when you also get better defence too?

Shields should be pretty much superior in defence, but in the current state, game is heavily relied on dealing as high damage as possible.
Next to nobody would use shields if they would have chance to dual wield.

Some games has it so that gives like -25% AC to main hand and -50% AC to offhand, and penalty can be lowered with skills.
As I see it, AT already give you very good posibilities of gaining high defence, imo it doesnt need to be increased anymore, especially if it would also increase already very high damage capabilities.

just some thoughts here,
as we haven't gotten too deep into discussing this...

[f.y.i.: these are my thoughts, not the consensus of the AT Dev Team]

Dual Weilding makes it harder to hit your target,
it doesn't make you easier to hit.

Two Handed Weapon: Always takes both hands
1.5 Hand Weapon (Bastard): Shield is an Option, but not another Weapon...
One Handed Weapon: Sheild is an Option, Light Weapon is an Option.
Light Weapon: One in each hand is an Option. (as is a sheild, but that is just silly)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

on a separate but related note,
Skills for more choices in battle...

Aggressive Attack: +20AC & -20BC (until end of round)
Defensive Fighting: -20AC & +20BC (until end of round)
Shield Bash: An Extra Attack, for Defensive Minded players w/o Dual Wielding
Trip: Costs Max AP - Opponent loses next turn.

Code: Select all

this is all really sloppy, and very loose...
the the first inklings of things i wish to discuss at greater length.
my hopes are that this may bolster a bit of talk about expanding Combat as well.
(as both seem somewhat related - in my eyes at least)
Market Release of v0.6.11 ANY DAY NOW!!!

0.6.12 Already, you are fast

LOL ;)

There are some of my thought of 2 weapon fighting, etc..
-Using shiel is wery wasy, but fighting with 2 weapons are really hard and difficult to learn
-If you mastered 2 handed armed combat you gain nice benefits agains human opponent, but defensive benefits when using of hand weapon is mostly useless agains any animal or monster attack.

Just some thought. I have training (some time ago) medieval weapon fighting. My personal choice is long or bastad sword without shield or off hand weapon.

I,too, have dual-wield experience, from ren fests. I like to fight with shortsword and dagger or two short swords. It does take quite a bit of experience to dual-wield, so I would create a skill advancement something like this..

Dual-wield:
Lvl1: -50%AC -10CHS Allows you to Dual-wield, but at a large penalty as you are still learning. Must be level 10 and have Weapon Accuracy Lvl1.

Lvl2: -25%AC -5CHS Allows you to Dual-wield. You're getting better but still have a bit to go to get it right. Must be level 20 and have Combat Speed Lvl1.

Lvl3: Allows you to Dual-wield without penalty. Requires level 30 and have Weapon Accuracy Lvl4.

Lvl4: +25AC +5CHS Allows you expertly Dual-wield. Requires level 40 and Combat Speed Lvl2.

Lvl5: +50AC +10CHS Allows you to Dual-wield your weapons superiorly. Requires level 50 and the Taunt skill.

The reason there is no negative to BC, is because you actually take a negative to BC already by disregarding a shield. Your off-hand weapon would not have a negative because when you train with two weapons you strive for both weapons to work as one, thus if you don't do as well with your left, your right also suffers.

So, as you start out Dual-wielding, you would take a large negative to your Attack Chance and Critical Hit Skill. As you advance, your ability increases in Dual-wield, to the point that your showmanship with your blades can confuse and intimidate your opponent (hence the requirement of Taunt for Lvl5 of the skill).

Intresting, but how the secondary weapon works, do you get additional attacks or what ?
