I finally got around to completing the Night Visit quest. However, I think there is a problem with the quest that needs to be corrected.

A number of the quests require spending money, usually while it is very precious early in the game. I just accepted this as part of the game, like finding that huge sum of 250 gold (huge at that point in the game) for the room in the Foaming Flask tavern.

I think if you keep going through the conversation you end up knocking off 100gold, and only bribing him with 400. Then it's not as much of a loss. I do agree that it stinks to lose money in completing a quest, but there's been others that you have to spend more than you get back...

Sometimes you need spend money as a part of storyline. I like this - life is not fair, but it is expensive

I agree with all your comments that sometimes you have to spend some money. My point is that once you've completed the quest, it would make sense that the reward be greater than the amount you spent. In fact, I think this should apply to all quests. The bonuses recieved upon their completion are all woefully small, especially the experience bonuses, considering the amount of experience necessary to level up. Completing any quest (taking into account at what level the intended player is likely to be) should give the player a significant bump towards the next level-up. So for example, if the developer believes that a certain quest would normally be completed by a level 5 player, then maybe the Exp bonus for that quest should be half the amount needed to go from level 5 to level 6. An early BW/Prim quest might pay half the amount to go from level 20 to level 21. In other words, completing a quest should give you a significant bump, much more than just the amount you would get from killing a couple of ordinary monsters.

+1
I couldn't have said it better myself (although I tried to in another topic). Especially at the higher levels where you need over 100k XP to level up, having the more difficult quests give more XP would really help. Or if possible, maybe even change it so the XP is a % of your current number, so you make the same progress to the next level, regardless of what level you're at.
