Stuck on the witch

I think I've done something wrong with the witch. I've done the quest only a couple of times before, and I'm on a permadeath character. I'm wondering if there's any way to recover (I'm on a permadeath character, so no saves).
The first time, I went into Boniksa's house, didn't strike her, let her hit me a couple of times, then left. I did the whole green maze, then came back and she still wanted to fight me. So I left again, did the Elm mine quest, came back, hit her once (to see if that would convince her to start talking), then left again.

Is it too late not to fight her? I must have missed an opportunity to parley earlier.

Yeah, I figured. I wonder what I missed (I've succeeded before).

"success" is relative. It's about perspective and what you deem to be the thing you want to do.
