You don't need to reload a savegame to get out of this quest: From time to time while wandering, Clevred is talking to you. Then you can tell him that you give up.
He will be disappointed but will accept, then you can go home and leave the quest.
But maybe you want to give it a last try before:
go to the outlet to the sky (that is half through). You already know that you can follow the rats to get back out. So to get deeper choose the path without rat.
Sometimes you will find that you enter a cave where the rat is at the cave entry. That means you are in a loopway: Go back to the latest crossing and choose the other exit without rat.

The problem I'm having with "Yellow it is" and the Ratdom in general has little to do with the quests per se, but rather, I can't for the life of me navigate the caves!Totally confused here. I have the pendant and can get to the "sky", and I can follow the rats back out to Crossglen. That's easy. I got to the Library once, but can't find my way back there. Can't find the Museum. I can blunder about and accidentally find new areas, but forget going much of anywhere on purpose or getting back to where I was. On the verge of calling it quits and going back to an older save right before I started the dream.
I've save this for "last" because I knew what I was in for. My character is level 82, full dual-wield. I can waltz in and out of Sullengard without trouble and have completed all the other quests except for the Loneford quests and "A Cat and Mouse Game".
Thanks!
I have to agree with Lyra_63 here. I tried this quest on one of my hero, now he is stuck in there, and I am not sure how to finish or quit the quest. So, I just left him there, and play my other heroes AND avoid doing this quest at all, in hoping this quest is not a pre-requisite for other quests. I mean, I love challenges once in a while, but after a long day, I just want to enjoy, not struggle to finish a quest. This quest definitely is not my cup of tea.
I've dropped rocks every few steps. Any passage I've not dropped rocks, I've not been in. Patience and a relaxed mind helps complete faster.
Good luck!
Hey Raptor, thanks for the response! You must pack a lot of rocks. I can see if you never sell them off (as I do) they would add up. I had thought of leaving some sort of bread-crumb trail, but don't have enough of some expendable item... like rocks. Doh! I'm holding on to random items more than I used to a few years ago in my early days of AT. Now I think I'll keep rocks!

That way you should be at the museum soon.
Hi Nut. Hey, I was hoping to get some good advice from you. I've been playing with the technique of travelling "anti-ratwize" (if I may coin a term), and it has given me some progress into new areas. I'm going to go work on this some more and hope to get back to the Museum again. My one time there, I may not have chosen the best options. Curious to see what happens on a return visit. I have killed the Skeleton Bros. (I call them Rosencrantz and Guildenstern because I can't remember their names! And, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead.)
Aside from a little frustration with the Ratdom, I do love this game. It's actually the only game I play.

Oh, yeah. If you choose to tell Clevred you quit, can you still get back in by sleeping in your bed in Crossglen? Or does the passage in the storage cave stay open?

Hmm, interesting. I found that I had to get my character (Lyra) back to Crossglen and talk to Clevred in the bed to opt out. I saved right before the dialogue, then told him that she quits. As you say, the Ratdom cave is still open. Interesting that you can restart the "Yello it is" quest. I may do it this way...
Curious that when I got back to the Library, there was no one there. I'll have to send Lyra to the Museum and purchase this pendant you mentioned. We seem to need it!! (Now I can't remember if we made it to the Museum at all. Hmm)
Thanks again.

I've got enough rocks to build a bridge to Remgard from the south shore of the lake!
