OK. I have finally defeated the beast in the lost potion quest (after having a complete rethink of my skills and weaponry). Am now bumping around in Elm mine

How does one get to that rope to climb down?

I have investigated the hole, and talked with Ehrenfest. Then talked to everyone in Prin, as well as the guards outside of the tunnel. When I go back to talk with Ehrenfest in the mine dining hall, he just says "Don't worry, we'll eventually get some answers." What must I do to progress this quest? Any assistance is appreciated

Ok. I have finally gotten a little progression. Got the water, talked to Jern, then went back and talked with Ehrenfest. I said I will solve it on my own and don't trust him, and he went away. I have talked to everyone in prin and the guards at the tunnel. I still cannot enter the mine. What is next?

Ok, talked to Jern. He got in a fight. Helped him, trying to warn the General, but I cannot find him. Any hints as to his location?
