Hullo! First of all, would like to thank everyone involved in the development of the game, as well as those who have been posting helpful hints and tips on this forum.

Am new to this game and been following the tips to build up DR for a new character. At one point, I had about 8DR and was farming at the gargoyle cave for the RoLS.

Just hit 30, and am now in the stage where I'm transitioning to other equips as DR slowly seems to be less useful.

On the other hand, 30 also seems to be the level when I should decide what path to take. Monk, 2H, DW, S&S? I've spent only two Skill Points thus far, both on IF. So now is the time to figure out what else to spend them on. I've also done the first Charwood Quest, but held off on deciding which proficiencies to take as I'm not sure what I would like to commit to.

I doubt I'll be making a second character, so would like this one to be able to experience as much of the game as possible. Because of that, I'm inclined to go DW. Any thoughts from the experts and masters on this board on this matter?

I also like the idea of inflicting status effects. So perhaps I should go crit build? Any suggestions on equips to gun for?

Personally, I've been a Sword and Shield player.
With only 1 build, have been using Flagstone's Pride, Black Defender, ROLS (hunting for a second one), Ring of Protector, Serpent's Hauberk, Enhanced Combat Helmet, Troublemaker's Gloves and Boots of the Globetrotter. With these equipment, AC 334, AD 44-60, BC 106 and DR 9, no area is too tough for me, and can enjoy criticals, while also facing critical-proof monsters with ease.
For info: Skills: Weapon Accuracy - 2, Hard Hit - 2, Bark Skin - 1, Combat Speed - 2 (this is most imp), Cleave - 2 (also considered imp), Corpse Eater - 2, Increased Fortitude - 1, Regeneration - 1, One hand sword proficiency - 2, Shield proficiency - 2. Fighting style: Weapon and shield - 2, and Specialization: Weapon and shield - 1. With these, am pretty well specialised in what I consider is a stable build.

These are my choices - hope these give you food for thought. :)

I went DW for exactly that reason. Initially I got dagger and one handed sword proficiencies, which makes for a lot of interesting combinations. Recently I also picked up blunt weapons, because I got the WoB. However, the various shields are now useless to me, so there is a tradeoff. Either DW or S&S you get to use two items. With Dual handed you only get to use one, and there aren't so many of them (good ones, anyway).

Or you could go the route that I eventually went and create 10+ characters, all built differently.

Monk is the weakest build before finishing the charwood quest.

After the quest and get "unarmed fighting", monk stand out and overcome other builds because the build is completed, while other builds are still collecting equipments, so monk shows quick result in early game.

However, DW reach its powerful period after getting its main weapons, which make the strength of DW builds overcome monk and become the most powerful build in middle game and late game.

About 2Hand, the main strong weapons of 2Hand is hard to get at early game, even middle game, but it doesn't mean 2Hand is weak, the strength of 2Hand build is strong enough to compare with DW in late game.

And weapon and shield...
You know, the build is called "weapon and shield", meaning you must holding a shield or a parrying weapon. Look at the list of shield, you will sadly discover that all the shield in the game is so weak when comparing with weapon.
I mean, if the "shield" in "weapon and shield" is that weak, then why not go "weapon and weapon"?

I am inclined to agree. I have thought about adding some better shields, but this is a very delicate thing. We do not want to add shields that are so good that sword and shield then becomes every players choice. We only added the damage modifier recently, to better balance the weapons. That seems to have worked quite well, but I think we still need to let the dust settle a little more from that before making other changes to rebalance the game. What we strive for is many choices that are different but equally good, but the only way we can do that is by gradual adjustments.

Thanks all for chiming in. I went dual wield and am working towards more internal bleeding for fun.

Now trying to decide between graveyard and green maze.
Can't get through graveyard. Need to build BC I think.
Went through green maze earlier but I don't think I reached the end and was burning through potions. Hoping to get a RoL to help but sick of imps. Hahhaa...

Grave yard could be done at level 32ish if you go go down slowly and go around the obstacles. But by level 36 its done easily

I disagree with you on this for most build types. The average is much closer to level 40+. My level 46 monk gets his you know what kicked in there

I forgot about the monk. I still haven't tried that yet
But since I played this through a lot, I know where to buy and or who/what to kill to get me the items
That's how I'm able to inch my way down in the graveyard. And attack the boss and then kill what comes down attack them and do the grave yard
