Scrolls

Potions and scrolls have always been mainstays of the fantasy RPG. Potions are used in AT either for healing or for temporarily causing an actor condition.

The Town Portal thread has put into my head the idea of using scrolls for other kinds of magic. As I said in the other thread, I don't think that the Diablo style of routine use of town portal scrolls would make sense in AT (though if you disagree, please keep that debate in the other thread), but I think there could be other types of magic spells that we might like to give our hero a shot at. I was thinking about using scrolls of spells that made lasting effects, not just temporary actor conditions.

Low level spells, like Enchant Armor or Enchant Weapon, could be made available in some shops, while more powerful spells like Teleport or Gain Level would be quest items or boss drops, and potentially unique items that you really must pick your spot to use.

I would like to get some feedback on this idea, and start some brainstorming on a list of possible spells.

Definitly got me thinking.... here's a few ideas:

Scroll of Fire Strike - Raises the maximum damage of your current weapon by 3AD

Scroll of Lightning Strike - Raises the minimum damage of your current weapon by 3AD

Scroll of Acid Strike - Equipped weapon gets: Upon successful hit, NPC gets -5% to BC

Scroll of Immaculate Immunity - For XXX turns you are immune to ALL status effects. (will remove any current status effects, including Shadow Regeneration for XXX turns)

Scroll of The Beast - You are teleported to a room and are forced to face against a mighty foe, if your win the rewards would be great (One time use, game saves after your win or die). Quest item, or maybe a boss drop?

Unidentified Scroll - This scroll can be any of the scrolls, but it is not written anywhere on it. Use it wisely. (Will not be The Scroll of The Beast)

Scroll of Midus - For XXX turns, NPC gold drop rate is raised by XXX%

Scroll of Death - Use this scroll and die, quite simple.

Scroll of Intangibility - for XXX turns you are untouchable and are unable to attack or be attacked by NPCs. You may even move thru NPCs that are in your way, but when the time wears out the NPCs will attack you if you are on them or within range.

Scroll of Rebirth - For the next XXX turns, the next time you die you will be revived with 1/4 of your max HP. One rebirth per scroll

Scroll of the Black Fog - When used the screen goes black for a second and when it comes back up all NPCs in your current tile will be dead and drop the max amount of Gold, but you gain NO XP.

Scroll of Mending - you gain Regeneration Lvl 2, stays in effect until you move, a fight is initiated, or have full health.

Hmmmmm.... I will post more later. Gonna sit and think for a bit on this.

Lots of great ideas here, Pyro.

Some of the XXX turns spells I'd like to see as potions instead .. Just trying to make a clear distinction of the kind of things that scrolls do and what portions do. Permanent vs temporary is an obvious factor. Affecting something external rather than the players body might be just as good, though

I agree making an distinction between what goes on scrolls or in potions will be important. '

Permanent VS Temporary:
Permanent should be used as quest rewards or drops from bosses, definitely not something players can get more than one of, any one item can only receive a bonus once (no multiple spells on a single weapon).

Affecting Something External VS The Player:
I think that having them effect items would be a better option and force players to really think out what they want to do with their build. I could see this being posted by a member if these were added: "Don't bless/enchant items that you will not continue to use"

I am actually quite pleased with some of the names I came up with. (I came up with a few variations)

Scroll of Rebirth : Scroll of the Phoenix
Scroll of the Black Fog : Scroll of Shadow's Furry
Scroll of Mending : Scroll of Stitching
Unidentified Scroll : Dusty Scroll

I rather like the new variations, myself. Very creative.

Absolutely, spells that permanently upgrade items would have to be used with care, especially if they are not available in shops. Perhaps no scrolls should be purchasable. Making then all unique drops would separate them even more from potions. Say there are no scroll makers in this world .. They are all ancient artifacts whose making is a lost secret. Rare and powerful.

But then perhaps you find a hidden colony of mages who can teach you a few of the simpler ones, after proving your loyalty with a few difficult quests on their behalf .. say, one against Feygard and one against the Shadow....

Scroll of Lifesteal*: (Enchant weapon) Enchanted weapon gets: gives 0-2 HP on a successful hit and 2 HP on a kill

*Cannot be used on Legendary, Extraordinary, Unique or Rare items.

After being Enchanted the weapon's name will now have "Of Lifesteal" added to the end of it.

Scroll of Invisibility - Player has xx 6 second rounds to go as far as possible without regard to NPCs (i.e. Can move right through them without any possibility of combat initiated by either side.)

Scroll of Teleport - Player can jump to any known location on the main world map. The world map opens, you tap on the target single map. That map openers in normal view, and you tap on the target tile. If you tap on an unwalkable one, you land on one chosen randomly from the nearest walkable tiles. This means you can't jump to a place you haven't been. Care would have to taken in implementing this to prevent you from skipping past a quest stage.

Invisibility was the original name i had for this one but I changed it before posting.

Scroll of Intangibility - for XXX turns you are untouchable and are unable to attack or be attacked by NPCs. You may even move thru NPCs that are in your way, but when the time wears out the NPCs can attack you if you are on them or within range.

Teleport - Never really been a fan of having this added. But that's just my opinion take it or leave it.

Nice ideas here guys... one thing though, passing through enemies wouldn't work (as far as I know) because if the effect wore off while you shared a tile with the npc, well I don't know what would happen then but I can't imagine it would be good.

There would need to be some sort of coding put it that automatically moves the player to the closest available spot if you share a spot with an NPC when the time runs out. That or have the NPC move one step off of you as it wears off. Either way would work.

I say if you did end up on the same spot at the end that the NPC should automatically attack.
