Nothing happens ;)
so *as of this moment* the ring is actually equal to a damage +6 ring unless you have a crit weapon... rendering it mostly useless in terms of the time required to earn it.

I prefer my 2 ap weapon, in the long run the DPH is higher IMO

I've bought two vicious strike rings and two damage +6 rings and I must concede. The guaranteed damage increase is killing monsters faster than the higher chance of triple damage. I LOVE high crit chance, why is the reality so cruel?

As it is with any game one must look at the overall damage one can deal over a period of time. Usually called DPS. Obviously since this game isn't real time we'll just refer to it as DPH (Damage Per Hit). a +6 damage ring gives you a flat +6 DPH, very easy to see and pretty potent. However Crits take a little more figuring out. say you have a 20% x3 crit weapon that does a flat 15 damage, your calculated DPH would be 45*20% + 15*80% = 21 DPH.

Now when you add in a 7% crit chance or a +6 damage you can calculate the effect it will have on this weapon.

+7 crit brings you up to 45 * 27% + 15 * 73% or 23.10 DPH for a net gain of 2.1 DPH

+6 damage brings you up to 63 * 20% + 21 * 80* or 29.4 DPH for a net gain of 8.4 DPH

As you can see adding damage gives you a massive increase to your overall damage output versus higher crit chances at the expense of burst damage.

This is why I feel that the existing +6 damage rings are significantly better than the ring of vicious strikes as well as the elusive ring of lesser shadow.

i agree with you, it seem like the steel sword with more fire power like damage rings +6 do more than the critical hits, as some monster do not response to critical hit, the tough ones

So when do you switch from two +6 dmg rings to two +7% crit rings? I'll tell you. Nerd alert.
According to the function supplied by Dreia, start off with two Ring of Damage +6, buy one Ring of Vicious Strike when your attack damage is 54 without any rings and replace the second RoD+6 when it gets to 66. If you don't want to bother with mixing rings, switch both rings out when your attack damage is 60 without any rings. Grab your graphing calculator (or Android app 'cause that's the nerd I am), heres the math:

Average DHP=3x(.2)+.8x
x=damage without rings

f(x)=3(x+12)(.2)+.8(x+12)
g(x)=3(x+6)(.27)+.73(x+6)
h(x)=3x(.34)+.66x

Now compare the graphs. f(x) is two RoD+6, h(x) is two RoVS and g(x) is one of each ring.
Also, the RoVS takes away 10% attach chance, so your less likely to land a hit.
Hope it helps.
