There's an IRC channel on freenode, but it's generally empty. IRC just isn't suited to the mobile world, unless you use a "bouncer", but it's another online service to set up.

We haven't tried discord yet. I've heard of it a lot from my younger gamer friends and colleagues, but I've never used it myself. I'll give it a look and see if it can be any good for us.

I personally like using matrix (via the riot.im app) for irc on android. Aside from being quute stable it allows me to seemlessly switch between using my phone and laptop. Also, maybe starting a matrix server for the game would be a good idea, haven't used discord but from what I gathered about it matrix does a lot of the same stuff and matrix is foss.
