Just a quick note on the size matter.
Why not use SVG ?
It's small (XML), it's vector graphics (no problems with resolution, almost no problem with portrait vs landscape vs strange screen ratio), and there's a pretty good rasterizer in pure Java that's FOSS (LGPL & BSD licenses, your choice) : SVG Salamander.
It's rather compact in terms of code too.

I used it in a sketch of a Java 2D game engine using OpenGL. The graphics were all SVG, with a given raster size fixed for a 1920x1080 screen size, and the soft rasterized the graphics in memory (can be cached too) at the correct size depending on user-selected game resolution/screen ratio. Worked like a charm.

I dunno if adding a lib + SVG file would be really more compact than a single large PNG, but if we add more "large-scale" graphics (after fights, for bosses, whatever), it could pay off.

I just skimmed through the whole thread. I like the very early idea of a winding path (see page 1), but artistically it would be a lot of work, and far beyond my capabilities. It seems like there were some really good images posted by Kruncha, but they are all gone now, except for one small one (see page 5). Anyway, what nyktos is proposing is an improvement, and has the advantage of being actually realizable :D

i totally agree, the font needs more "flavor" - without going overboard.

i just wasn't happy with what i had in my fonts folder last night...
gonna have to load up some others & work on it a bit more.

your in the right direction, kinda makes me think Gaelic... :D
