Fast travel isn't high on my wish list for this game, considering ( as mino and nether have pointed out) you can already fast travel via beds ( which does work great ) but in any case, I wouldn't be heartbroken if it were ever implemented .... I have recently been completely engrossed in a PS3 game called, Fallout: New Vegas which plays a lot like AT in many ways... anyway... in that game there is fast travel ( if you've already discovered said location ) but you don't " teleport " or " use scrolls.." instead, it just skips the manual part of traveling... The game keeps it realistic because A) if you play hardcore mode and your body is "to weak" to make the trip, you can't fast travel until you are rested, eat, or take a stimpack... B) the game has day and night, so even time passes according to how long it would take you to make the trip... so basically, you would instantly arrive at your destination, it just isn't done in a magical teleporty kind of way....

I have an idea about traveling without fast travel. If the monsters are significantly lower level, you could have an instant kill button. It would kill the monster but without any reward. This way there's no complex algorithms to sort out and its like the monster "moves away" from you.

If you want fast travel, then I agree that it should be from town to town, expensive depending on town or distance traveled, and only work on towns you've visited/done a quest to unlock the caravan master in or something like that. I wouldn't suggest the chance for bandit attack, waiting a certain amout of time or anything like that, or HP loss or conditions. The money loss is a good deterent.

By the way, this game is awesome

This isn't like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest where the monsters hit you out of nowhere based on a random encounter chart. You can see and avoid the monsters if you don't want to fight them. And if you want to make sure that they don't attack you when you're force to get close, that's what Evasion is for.

And if the enemy is that weak already, what's the difference between tapping the OHKO button, and just tapping the screen once to kill them?

Some monsters block areas of access, have a lot of HP and require multiple hits to kill regardless of level. Not every build dishes out mega damage. Its a time issue, that's what fast travel is all about. If you have to encounter all the monsters you can't avoid along the path you wish to travel on, why not be able to instakill to get past them quickly if you're much much higher in level than them?

To make something like this realistic, what about a "bribe" function?

Mobs will let you pass when the bribe succeeds, and will take something that makes sense from your inventory: a small amount of coins for humanoids, meat for wild animals, gems for others...

and when you're not diplomatic enough, you don't have the right bribe, or the monsters takes the bribe and decides to come unpredictable :D , it will attack.

Good things about a bribe function will be that it might be useful for low levels to avoid a fight, for high levels to not loose to much time fighting when travelling around, and it could even be enhanced with some new diplomacy skill.

I would rather take the time to travel myself than let the game do it for me.

Plus as we add more maps, getting from one city to another will get easier since you will not have to go the long way.

IMHPO: Fast travel isn't something i am interested in seeing in game.

I think fast travel is a necessity for a game where the map is huge and you need to walk everywhere to get around

I don't think that fast travel is necessary right now but it'll be useful in the future. Imagine, you needed to walk through the whole world to finish a quest! Sometime, there will be definetely a point in the game where most players would be grateful for said addition.
But of course, there should be some limitations:
You are only able to fast travel between inhabited villages/towns.
You have always to pay a larger amount of money to fat travel: e.g pay coachmen oru use teleporter.

Maybe fast travel is added sometime in the future or not. But personally, I could live without it.

I can live without it but would also use fast travel if it became available and the cost wasn't too high.
I'd also like to see a quest to reopen the mine that leads to Prim so we don't have to stumble in the dark.
