I disagree. Darkness just means an absence of light. A shadow is a darker area caused by an object getting in the way of the light. So you can't have a shadow without light.

Ace, life can indeed exist without light, or have you never learned of the creatures living below ground or beneath the sea where the light never goes?

Extremophiles are interesting, but many of them are still down the food chain from photosynthesis, even if they live in total darkness. Yes, many extremophiles simply digest organic detritus that descends from photosynthesis, and a few even are phototrophs themselves. But there some that get chemical energy directly from mineral sources, with no dependence on the sun.
