Are the creatures on the map from the update, or do you have to hope they pop? (e.g. If I kill absolutely everything on the way to Remgard, will I guarantee getting the fifth?

Those monster's are on map... you just need to find them ;)

SUPER SPOILER ALERT!!!

there are five unique monsters, that spawn only once...
if you kill them - they will drop the crystal they hold 100% of the time.

(if you get more than 5 crystals, the unique monster glitched & spawned again [map bug?])

locations & descriptions:
Giant Larval Burrower - red catepillar (small cave of them)
Izthiel Guardian - the one that drops the Shadowfang (extraordinary drop)
Ancient Allaceph - dragon-looking demon (the only one that is not on the way to Remgard)
Plaguestrider Master - black robe humanoid (in spider cave)
Strong Maonit Brute - troll (forgot if it was grey or red?)
and...
they are usually standing still, i think all of them are?
when you find one - it will be MUCH more powerful than their standard counterparts!

In the last version, the eastern exit of Loneford was a dead end...
(the farming town with the sick people - look for a fenced area)
but now it continues to a dried up lake bed, there you will find a deep cave with quests.
and the monster you are searching for.
