Just noticed stats for previous kills on lombric ball shows 53 but this is my first encounter with the monster after starting the quest. Is this an error? What explains it?

If I recall correctly, there are very different-looking lombric balls all over the place earlier in the fungi caves, before you get to the tentacle-bearing ones like in your screen shot - I assume the previous count includes those.
