random idea, some thug can come steal something from you...
and you have to search out all the empty cabins in the area to find his temporary hideout.
when you find & slay him - your item is returned to you.
implementation: you talk to him casually in the feild, and when the dialogue box closes...
a toast can pop up - telling you the hero just "lost" something.
[he should either disappear, or, make his way off the screen]
if he moves away from you, rather than disappearing...
then the toast shouldn't pop up until he is out of range.
