What about elevation change? If you could make slight variations of "sand dune" tiles and layer some of them with an elevation effect, it would be a pretty neat effect even on a map otherwise empty of significant landmarks. Your character would appear to 'wave' up and down as s/he crosses the screen over the dunes.

We have some bogs in the works.
Desert does not have to be featureless. I've spent a lot of time in the western deserts of the US, and they are anything but featureless. Very different from forest etc., but certainly not featureless. It's more a question of how they would fit into the existing world.
