Pond Safety quest

I need help. I've completely hit a brick wall with the Pond Safety quest. I've...
walked round and round the pond multiple times
but I cannot for the life of me work out how to...
kill the monsters which are, I assume, what I can see moving in the pond.
Any pointers gratefully received. I bet I've missed something blindingly obvious.
