Thanks for the info about the armor, I thought it was just the shield.

Maybe when he inspects our items he can also drop hints on what could be upgraded. In the meantime I guess I could just buy one of everything and see what happens.

I feel like the Enhanced Combat Gloves (upgraded item, 4 hp, -5 AC, 10 BC) aren't as good as the Enchanted Remgard Gloves (4 HP, 2 AC, 8 BC), which can be bought. Shouldn't the upgraded stats be better than an item which can be bought?
