You can kill snakes in the snake cave just south of Crossglen, you'll get a lot of meat there, too. Selling meat is the best way to make money in the beginning.

Save your money, there are better rings and really good equipment very close to Crossglen.
In Fallhaven there is a (almost) musthave necklace, and Ailshara at the crossroads tavern to the north of Crossglen sells items too good to be true for such an easy accessible merchant!

Don't forget the Priest in Loneford sells some items with a good amount of DR (the necklace for starters) which can be very handy for low level players. 2 damage is quite a bit when your total HP is somewhere around 25.
