1:500 would be only 499 losers.
2:1000 has 998 losers
It's hard to explain...
It's like buying a lotto ticket
If you buy one, you have a one in a million chance to win.
If you buy two, you have a two in a million chance to win.
Not a one in five hundred thousand.
You increase the quotient, you don't decrease the divisor
Like I said, I understand. I'm just pickin' on ya (in a friendly way).
It is a chance statistic..., and I just realized I've been writing it wrong
With mf 2, it's 2:1000
Think this way:
You have a bingo cage with 1000 balls in it
You have random number x and number y
every time you kill an extraordinary item carrying mob, you draw 1 ball, you check it for a match, then put it back in the cage.
It's a .2% chance to win... Not 1/500
There is a difference
Actually, there's not
.2% means .2 per 100, which is identical to 1 per 500.
I understand what you mean concerning the probability of winning the lottery with one vs two lottery tickets, but this case is different---at least according the Le & Ex items thread.
In this case, we are given a percentage for each level of MF. And that is inconsistent with what you are saying.
Also, if you think about the implications of your hypothesis, it would make the MF skill truly useless.
Just wondering because at this point in the game I think im going to go for straight magic finder/QL with fortitude along the way. Things are dying too quick to warrant any other skill really and everything else I already have.
I've got 2 in magic finder, but i've only got 1230 rocks and no ring, so too early to tell really. i'm sticking with the just two points, double chances seems a good choice and i want other skills. I'm level 31.
Shadow is faster than light - how else can it get out of the way?
Long answer:
My main game, the one in my signature, has Magic Finder level 10, and even though I feel like it made a difference and got me faster drops, there's really no way to prove it. But I spent no more than a day's worth of playing to get the Legendary items (maybe a couple days for the 2 RoLS, and I ended up with 3 of those and 2 ElyR). I also lucked out in getting 1 each of the Silk Robe and Shimmering Hat, unlike my new game who has 3 hats and no robe. For the Extraordinary items, in my new game I so far have managed to get a ShadowFang in addition to the 3 Shimmering hats, and am currently working on a Chaos Reaper. I definitely feel like I got those faster with MF 10, ending up with 60+ (I sold whatever number I had over 50).
But that's the thing with these odds. Even if its 1 out of 10,000, that 1 could happen on the 10,000th kill, or it could happen on the 5th kill, and theoretically if you kill another 9,995 there might not be another drop, but who's going to keep going after they get the item?
