Speaking of banning something without cause, there is a town in Massachusetts that has recently banned leaf blowers because they are to loud. Now I say again, where is this world headed?

lady black wrote:One thing I have noticed is that you use the wrong witch. This is a common error, because there are two words that sound the same. A "witch" is a woman who works magic. Folklore has many witches, usually old, ugly, and evil. The word you want is "which", which you have been using very well except for spelling it as the other word.
*slides up a chair over the rough wooden floor*

Actually, a witch in modern day can be male or female, and usually refers to one who practices the Wiccan religion. Wiccans practice magick, worshipping nature, and strive to do good, hence their creed, "An harm none do as thou will", meaning that you may do as you please as long as no one is hurt by what you do. They also believe that whatever you do comes back to you threefold, whether it be good or ill, so there's not much incentive to hurt anyone, lol. Not much like the witches portrayed by the Christian faith. ;)

Of course, there are many kinds of pagans, Wiccans being only one of the religions that revere nature, and not one worships the Christian Satan. ;) The word Pagan literally means "country dweller".

I was trying to make a grammatical point, not a religous one. The word Sarumar wants is "which", not "witch." I felt some explanation of the word was required. if you ask 100 people at random in the US to define "witch" I believe that at least 95 will give you an answer fitting well with "MacBeth" and "Hansel and Gretel," conical black hats, flying broomsticks. etc.

As to the gender of witches, Western folklore has mostly female witches, that I have ever run across. But Sarumar is a Finn, and an item of trivia that is surfacing is saying that I once read something about witches in Finnish folklore mostly being men, and being involved in binding and loosing the winds to give fair winds to the ships at sea. So maybe I blew it in my description of a witch for Sarumar

I would like to point out that I never mentioned religion, Wicca, Satan or Satanism, Pagan or Paganism, or witch-hunts, Salem, etc in my original post concerning two English words and which one to use in his posts.

All further instructional posts to Sarumar on English usage will be carried out by PM.
