Bare in mind whenever you go over it u will pick up the entire contents not just the last items dropped... at least I think so anyway.

You can drop anything, anywhere, anytime. It'll never disappear until you pick it up. Some use this to chart the path in dark labyrinths.

Yes but the basket is the only place that dissent show up like a "drop" so it's tidier but that's just me being fussy

So if I leave something on the ground it won't go away even if I leave the area or use a bed?

Ah, but the basket in Crossglen is not your only stash spot... Though, it should be pointed out that there is one place where there is a half a stash spot; the tree trunk beside the cabin south of Snake Cave, NE of the Wolf Pack. Its a hidey-hole, but dropping items appears as a regular drop. I think we should use it for a quest: place an item there so a mysterious NPC can pick it up later.
EDIT:I just talked myself into writing a quest for that!

There's another one at the basket in Prim INN and the little cave between Loneford and Remgard. And not to forget Vacor's Cave.
